About Artist: French American artist born in 1978. Sowat, born between the South of France and Los Angeles, California, made his first paintings on the railways, highways and wastelands of Marseille. Member of the Da Mental Vaporz crew with whom he has travelled the world, Sowat develops a calligraphic work inspired by the Cholo letters of Chaz Bojorquez, the art of the Latino gangs used to mark areas of Los Angeles. He is the co-author of the book "La France d'en Bas " (2003), documenting the rise of Graffiti in the South of France. His teaming with Lek in 2009 marks the beginning of their “Mausolée” project, that took place in a disused supermarket in the Parisian outskirts, which they invested with forty french Graffiti artists. During this savage artistic residency, Sowat developed his taste for filming and editing, signing the project’s seven minute time lapse video, blending graffiti, decaying architectural elements, traces of life left behind by the former squatters with Philip Glass’ music. At the Palais de Tokyo, in adition to their group show, the duo secretly shot “Direct Traces”, a film about the apparition and destruction in graffiti culture, discreetly inviting twenty artists to draw on a blackboard. Since then, they have participated in a roundtable with Jacques Villeglé at the Centre Pompidou, the project les Bains Douches, the Tour Paris 13, and also an exhibition at Agnes B’s at Galerie du Jour in 2013 where he worked on a collective work with Jonone and Lek .
