Ronald Brooks Kitag

About Artist: Ronald Brooks Kitag (1932 - 2007) was born in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. He studied at New York's Cooper Union Institute. Kitaj then worked for a short time as a merchant seaman and visited Havana, Mexico and South America. After this Kitaj studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Vienna, the Ruskin School in Oxford and the Royal College of Art in London - here Kitag befriended David Hockney. R.B. Kitaj's first solo exhibition was at Marlborough Fine Art in London. He taught at the University of California, Berkeley for two years and then University of California Los Angelas in 1970, before returning to London. In 1983 Ritaj married American artist Sandra Fisher. Kitaj's work has been elected into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He was the first American since Sargent to be inducted into the Royal Academy. Retrospectives of his work have been held at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington DC, the Tate Gallery in London, Los Angelas County Museum of Art and New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.
