About Artist: Thomas Ruff was born in Zell am Harmersbach in the Black Forest, Germany. In 1974 he attended evening classes to learn the basics of photography before purchasing a camera. During his time in Dusseldorf, Ruff developed his method of conceptual serial photography. He began photographing landscapes and living quarters. Ruff also started taking pictures of friends and acquaintances from the Dusseldorf art scene. He studied photography under Bernd and Hilla Becher in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Since his first exhibition at Galerie Radiger Schattle in Munich he has appeared at Documenta, the Venice Biennale, the Biennale of Sydney and the Bienal de Sao Paulo.
