Vik Muniz

About Artist: Vik Muniz was born in Sao Paulo in 1961 and began his career as a sculptor until he relocated to New York in 1983 where he found his niche incorporating a multiplicity of unlikely materials into his artistic process. Vik has used chocolate, dirt, diamonds, sugar, and string as his mediums, as well his famous use of peanut butter and jelly to create Double Mona Lisa, After Warhol, in 1999 based on a 1963 screen print by Andy Warhol, and which in turn was an appropriation of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa. His inspiration stems from antiquity and ancient greece as well as more recent movements such as Pop Art that led him to developing an extensive portrait portfolio. It is his exploration of texture and medium that sets Vik Muniz prints aside from any other visual artist working today. His work has been met with both commercial success and critical acclaim and has been exhibited worldwide. Today he focuses largely on photography and resides in Brooklyn, New York.
