About Artist: Eduardo Paolozzi was born in 1924 to Italian parents. He studied at the College of Art in Edinburgh, then St Martin's School of Art and eventually Slade School of Art. In 1940, when Italy declared war on Britain, Italians living in Britain were interned. During this three month period his father, grandfather and uncle (also detained) were drowned as the ship carrying them to Canada was sunk by a German U-boat. After his studies, Paolozzi spent time working in Paris; here he made the acquaintance of Alberto Giacometti, Jean Arp, Constantin Brancusi, Georges Braque and Fernand Leger. On his return from Paris, Paolozzi moved to London and worked in a Chelsea studio full of models, sculptures, materials, tools, toys and stacks of books.
Paolozzi first widespread recognition was for his production of striking screenprints and Art Brut sculpture. In the early 1950s he was responsible for founding the Independent Group, widely considered to be the precursor of the Pop-Art movement his college I was a Rich Man's Plaything is considered one of the most formative examples of what is now considered Pop-Art.
